What are we expecting?

Have you ever had to wait for something that felt like it took so long to arrive that it drove you to frustration, and what made it worse was that when it finally arrived you were super disappointed because it 100% was NOT what you expected? Maybe it was a concert you were looking forward to, or maybe something you ordered on Amazon in the thick of the pandemic.

Regardless, we’ve all been there. The people of Israel had been waiting for the messiah to arrive for centuries. They had heard the prophecies of the soon coming King who would reign in power and rule with justice and authority. And when He finally arrived, from his birth to his death, He was nothing like what they expected. He rides into Jerusalem in victory and it looks like this may be the King they were waiting for, but little to their surprise, he once again wouldn’t “measure up” to their expectations. So today, 2000 years later in a season of discord and disease, what Jesus are we expecting? Could it be that He is already here and moving? Do we recognize him?

Question 1:

What are some of the false expectations you’ve had of Jesus in this season?

Question 2:

Jesus entered into our world, lowly in a manger. He rode into Jerusalem, lowly, on a colt. Ultimately He goes to death lowly, on a cross. What does this lowly nature in which Jesus exemplified mean for us?

Question 3:

What does Jesus’s Triumphal entry mean for you? What does it mean for the world?
